You’ve made it this far, not bad. In fact, you might even say that overall, you’ve done pretty well. So, how did you manage to get to where you are today? In other words, what are some of the things you’ve done right to make it to the point that you’re currently at? It’s probably fair to say that some of the traits that have helped you survive and thrive over the years include: hard work, persistence, determination, faith, intelligence, courage, creativity, adaptability, and confidence.

And although you’ve enjoyed success along the journey, every day presents new challenges that must be dealt with and overcome. So, what are you doing to address these new challenges? One option, although not a very good one, would be to do nothing and hope it all goes away. Another option is to confront the challenge head-on. But the real question is, do you have what it takes to deal with the new challenges that exist on the horizon? Have you even identified what those may be?

Over the years, most of us have relied heavily on our unceasing work ethic and sheer determination to get through a difficult issue. Basically, you vow to outwork and outlast anything or anyone that stands in your way. You’re almost certain that the force of your commitment and persistence can get you through the next dilemma as it has in the past. And chances are you’re right. But what if you’re not?

I’m sure that at one time, railroad barons were confident that the automobile would never catch on. And back in the 1980s, would you have thought that film giant Kodak would ever lose its market share to filmless, digital cameras? Ultimately, everything changes. Even as far back as 500 B.C., Greek philosopher Heraclitus knew that “The only constant is change.” And it’s as true today as it was 2,500 years ago.

So as the business climate and the marketplace change around you, what are you doing to adapt to these changes? Many of the characteristics that you’ve counted on to get this far have worked well in the past. But will they continue to make your endeavors profitable in the future?

Unfortunately, what’s gotten you to where you are now, most likely won’t get you to where you need to go next. Keep moving, keep adapting, keep growing... the possibilities will be endless!
